My 1990 Bayliner 2050 4.3L v6 will not run over 3000 RPM. It starts & idles fine. Take her out of gear and free rev the engine....no problems.
Try to give it enough gas to get up on plane and the engine dies. Filled it up with Premium fuel to make sure it's not a water in fuel problem, but it runs great when not under load, so I assume it's not fuel related. Once under load at 3K RPM and it dies every time. Can anyone help??
There are NO competent marine mechanics anywhere near me in WV!!!!

I will check all fuel filters first then check fuel pump pressure, then if those are not the problem, do a carb cleanup make sure all jets are clean blow'em with some compressed air, check all passages , put new gaskets when you put all back .
Just my 2 cents.

I concur with cbucner, there is a fuel or air shortage somewhere. Hmmm is your butterfly valve openin all the way when you try to plane?

I had same problem last year, turned out to be there was debris in the filter gauze of the the pipe that came from the fuel tank, cleaned it out and all went fine.

Going to need more information

My 1990 Bayliner 2050 4.3L v6 will not run over 3000 RPM. It starts & idles fine.
Boat information is irrelevant. What is the manufacturer, model and serial number of your engine

Take her out of gear and free rev the engine....no problems.
This means nothing and is bad for your engine

Filled it up with Premium fuel to make sure it's not a water in fuel problem, but it runs great when not under load, so I assume it's not fuel related.
False. If you have water in your tank and you Add premium fuel(which your engine does not need) it will not remove the water.

What part of WV?

All we have established is that your engine cannot run above 3k while under load. We don't know if it is fuel or ignition related. The problem could be any of the following:
bad fuel, fuel filters, fuel pump, worn cap/rotor, plugs, ignition not advancing, weak or defective coil, carb partially plugged.......

Most of these are items that you should replace if you don't know when it was last done (ie, filters, cap, rotor, plugs, wires) If you are still having problems afterwards, you will need to determine if it is fuel or ignition related.

This person already solved his problem on another site...it was the small carb filter.

Yes....
It was the mini filter at the carb inlet. Full of crap, probably never changed over the boat's 17 year life. I'm installing a water seperator while I'm at it though.
Thanks for the help.
