4.3GL-A thermostat

I have a 2002 Volvo 4.3GL-A. I had my thermostat housing off and it looked like the raw water intake hose dumps into the bottom of the housing where the thermostat spring is and the water flows out through a hose to the engine circulating pump. I was wondering how the water gets to the manifolds when the thermostat is closed? Is there a port that I did not see. Water comes out the exhaust as soon as I start the engine so it is going through the manifolds when the engine is cold. Does anyone know of a diagram that will show water flow through the housing when the stat is open and closed. Some time I need a picture to understand things Thanks

Perfect! Thank you Don that diagram is just what I needed. When I had the housing off I did not see that bypass. I was all set to take it off again to satisfy my curiosity but you saved me the trouble. Thanks again.
