4.3l Cobra won't shut off

After repairing a bad valve the engine won't shut off.
The problem is electrical as wiggling the alternator connector will shut it off. The voltage regulator was making intermediate contact.
Bad diodes in the alternator ?
By the way, the voltmeter drops down and jumps around after the key is turned off.
