I have a 1987 celebrity w a 4.3l 205 hp engine. the carb was rebuilt at the marina last year and continues to flood. gas is filling the carb and pouring out on the manifold. i disconnected the clear tube from the fuel pump and no gas was coming out so i think the fuel pump is ok. i took it to a different marina and they said its possible the secondary jets are bad. i noticed today that the oil level on the dipstick is way too high. i think there might be gas in the oil. Any way is this a carb problem? should i replace it with a reman. roch 4bbl

This would do better in the engine section, but...

Did the problem first occur after the rebuild?
And...
Have you checked your floats?

Re: 4.3L flooding PLEASE HELP

it was happening before the rebuild. and since i took it to two different marinas i have to assume the floats were checked and properly adjusted by at least one of the mechanics. part of the problem is it doesn't happen all the time. (only when we have company). when i took it to the marina after the rebuild it would work fine then i would take it out and it would flood. BTW how do i post this in the engine section?

Well, I'm not going to profess to be an expert on carburetors, but the 'bad secondaries' idea sounds like a lot of hogwash to me. Jets plug up and restrict flow. I've never heard of one opening up and allowing too much fuel through, unless the jets fell out completely, but that wouldn't be an intermittent problem.

The bit with the fuel overflowing out onto the manifold sounds weird too. Are you saying the carb throat fills up and floods over the top? If so, that would definitely get gas in your oil, but it would take an awful lot of fuel to completely fill up the intake manifold to where it topped the carb.

It sounds to me more like you have an external leak somewhere like in the fuel line connection or one of the float gaskets.

Or a sticky float.

Re: 4.3L flooding PLEASE HELP

The Rochester 4bbls have well plugs in the bottom of the bowl and they can lose seal and let the bowl drain right into the manifold.

This seems to be an event occurring more frequently here of late, could be ethanol related or could just be these carbs are all about the same age and hitting this at the same time in their lives.

The plugs can be resealed, have to take the carb all apart again. If that is what the problem is then too bad they missed this during their rebuild.

You can google/search for Rochester well plugs and find out a lot more.
