I have an 87 4.3L OMC Cobra and I was wondering if anyone had tried the HEI conversion? It seems really easy, if you can find a V-6 Hei unit. The only problem I can think of would be the lack of vacuum ports on a marine carb. If anyone has tried it please give me some feedback.
Thanks, Mark

I also have a 1987 4.3 OMC on one of my boats.

Recently have read several postings on another site that warns against electronic ignition conversions on OMC's due to the elecrtonic assist shift module.

Apparently, there has been a record of fires breaking out in these cases. This history has convinced me to forget the conversion.

I just found out on another site that OMC/Bombadier makes a direct replacement unit for the 87 4.3L. It is a marine unit and is a drop in replacement. Part# is 988165. You can get it from your OMC dealer for around $200.

That's the same site whose moderator warned about the Pertronix units causing fires. Guess the issue only applies to Pertronix conversions.
