4.3l omc cobra oil question

have a 1995 OMC cobra 4.3l with the cobra outdrive. I was wondering if the outdrive oil is connected to the engine oil and if it circulates through both of them. I have had one mechanic say they connect and another say they don't. Also what type of oil should i use in this motor?

Engine oil does not flow through the drive!
The lower unit uses GL-5 rated gear oil.
The engine probaly calls for SEA 30 weight.
Get a service manual,there is a specific method to fill the drive,if not done correctly the gears are history.
