4.3L single point drain; New water pump on engine, now temp gage doesn't read

I changed out the on-engine wtaer pump on a 4.3L MPI engine with a single point drain. After re-starting the engine running on the muffs it ran well, didn't overheat, cool water in the inlet hoses at the water pump, warm water out the outdrive showing engine cooling was taking place, but no indication whatsoever on the temperature gage.

I have seen situations in automobiles where the temperature gage won't read properly because it is in an air bubble in the cooling system, and the correction is to bleed the cooling system. I have not seen any reference to bleeding the system for this engine, and expect it would not be necessary as the thermostat housing has direct by-pass to the manifolds... but did I miss something?

The engine was not running when I started the job so I don't know if the gage was working previously. It very well could be a bad gage, bad sender, or a broken wire. If so that is another story.... I just want to be sure I'm not missing an important step in the water pump job.

Nope,.... No bleedin' necessary,.....

Ground out the sender wire at the t-stat housin', it should Peg the gauge,...

Thanks, Bondo.

I'll start trouble shooting the gage and its wires then.

Be sure the engine really is getting to temp specs. If the thermostat is stuck open then most times the gauge won't move much past 100-120 degrees and you'll think the gauge isn't working as 100-120* is just the starting point to getting the gauge needle to move/show you a temp reading.

Does the gauge even move slightly at key up?
