4.3lx fuel pump issue???

Last week I posted because I had trouble getting my boat started.

On saturday I had the same issue but kept a an eye on the carb when starting it.

I pumped the accelerator a couple of times and watched the fuel spray into the carb.
I turned the key and it started right up but stalled after a few seconds.

I pumped the carb again but no fuel.
I cranked the engine over a couple of times but still no fuel.

I then disconnected the fuel line at the carb and tried again.
No fuel out of the line

I tried it couple more time before fuel came out of the line.

I connected it back up, it started on the first try and ran fine for the rest of the day.

Same issue on Sunday but I repeated the steps above and it worked fine.
Does this mean the fuel pump is going? Could it be the water separator clogged? Maybe somthing in the tank?

I am trying to avoid spending $150 to $250 on a pump if I do not need it.

Chech the condition of the 2-wire plug on the fuel pump. Mine had bent tabs inside and would not make contact sometimes. I bent them with a small screwdriver and have had no problems. You will have to look at the metal tabs inside the connector and figure out witch way to bend them to make better contact.

Yup check the connector carefully, have seen contact issues there several times.

I will check.

Although, it does run fine once I get it running.

Re: 4.3lx fuel pump issue???

I think I traced the issue back to a loose connection at the starter.

Unfortuntly the boat started fine the last couple of times so I cant test and really want to make sure it is fixed before I put it away.

Can someone confirm if the statements below are true?
1. On a cold engine with the key in the "on" position there should be NO voltage to the fuel pump
2. When I crank the engine the power comes from the solenoid on the starter.
3. when the engine hits 3-4 psi the power comes from through the oil pressue switch.

if I crank my engine, with no power coming from the starter, will power come from the oil switch even if the engine did not start?

Re: 4.3lx fuel pump issue???

As confusing as my previous post was...i think I was able to test it out.

I disconnected the wire on the starter that was loose. It took a couple of rotations but there was power to the pump.

I disconnected the wire on the starter and one of the wires on the oil pressure switch and the was no power to the pump (expected)

I then connected the wire at the starter and disconnect the oil switch. There was power as soon as I turned the key to start.

So to make a long story even longer. It looks like a loose connection at the starter was keeping power from hitting the fuel pump until the engine built up enough oil pressure from turning over.

Thanks to all that provided suggestions
