4.3PEFS temp alarm switch

I have a 2001 Larson with the 4.3PEFS engine and I found a loose wire under the dash. It is red with a black stripe. I was able to trace it back to the temp alarm switch (not the temo guage sensor) though a continuity check. Is this wire supposed to connected to power? Am I losing any of my other alarms if this is disconnected? I am looking for a wiring diagram now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tan with a black stripe is what Volvo uses for the alarm system. Not sure what the red/black is. Red/blk strips isn't even in the wiring diagrams. Here are the wiring diagrams for your engine.

Thanks Don. The wire is tan and black. I am a bit colorblind. The wire that I am talking about (that is just hanging loose under my dash) connects to #15 on the diagram that you provided. I tested continuity by hooking up my multimeter to the hanging wire and to the wire that connects to my temp switch. I know that my oil pressure alarm works as it sounds when I turn the key on.

On the digagram it shows the tan wire with a black stripe is connected a circular "thing" with numbers on it (sorry I am not an electronics guy). What is this? and if the wire under my dash is disconnected - why would my oil pressure alarm work? I am hoping that the previous owner did not do some "custom" wiring! As always, thanks for the help and the quick responses!

Not sure I understand what you are asking about with the circular thing. If you opened that document, it has 4 pages, and the items are named and have numbers to them.
It would also be handy to know which diagram you are looking at, as there are two.

I believe the circular thing with numbers on it is a representation of the pins in the harness connector. Numbers 1-8 around the edge then 9 and 10 in the middle? If you had the actual connector in your hand you will be able to make out the pin numbers.

Sorry for the confusion - I did not see the other pages.

So I was talking about page 1 where the tan/black wire connects to the pin 4 on the connector. I assume this runs up to the dash and comes out on pin 4 under the dash. I am assuming this is the alarm wire? On page 4 of the diagram the tan/black wire connects to the "audible warning horn" (#17 on page 4). Is this an under dash warning horn that is in addition to the alarm (#14 on page 1) that is in the engine compartment? This is the wire that is hanging disconnected under my dash This would make sense as I do not hear an alarm coming from under the dash. Thanks a ton for your help! I am learning a bunch here!

Since you have the horn on the engine, you may not have the one under the dash and probably don't. Volvo has been using that same instrument panel wiring diagram since the joint venture with OMC started. On most engines, even some of the same year as yours, the horn is under the dash, only some had it on the engine.

And yes #4 is the same on both ends. They use an extension harness of the proper length to reach the helm.

Thanks! That makes sense. Puts me at ease. One last question - if I ground the temp switch wire should the alarm go off?
