I'm finally getting back to the impeller replacement on my 4.5 hp S/N 7216798.
It's been so long since I started that I can't remember how it came apart (I must have too many projects).
I have the impeller in the housing, the keyway is all lined up, and all parts accounted for except I can't figure out where 2 rubber parts go in. Arrg!
One is a rubber grommet looking thing about the same I.D. as the drive shaft and the other is an O ring.
I linked to the parts diagram below for reference. The parts look like number 33 and 30 but I'm not sure.
I also took a couple of photos so you can see the parts exactly.
Thanks in advance,
Grant

Grommet thingy looks like the centrifugal slinger.... sits just above the water pump on the drive shaft (Item 33).

Not sure about the o-ring. Is there an o-ring groove on top of your drive shaft?

There is an o ring groove on the drive shaft (o ring fits perfectly) and the grommet thingy appears to fit on the top of the w/p housing perfectly too.
I am now having trouble installing the lower unit onto the leg. I can get the unit installed but it doesn't seem to line up easlily. The mounting surfaces don't meet evenly (one edge makes contact first) and the drive shaft doesn't seem to be engaged to the powerhead in any gear. Also, I managed to get it all bolted up but it didn't pull any water up. All the passages seem clear. I can blow air through from the tell tale through to the bottom of the leg with little restriction.
My 1987 70 was easier than this thing...

Thanks,
Grant

These little ones can be a bugger to line up. Remember that you need to line up the driveshaft, the shiftshaft, and the water tube all at the same time. You should have a guide tube on the water pump outlet to help align the water tube easier.

Sometimes helps to have an assistant turn the flywheel a little it to help the splines on the driveshaft/crankshaft align easier.

Good luck.
