4.5 Lower Unit Removal

Can anyone advise me as to where to disconnect the shift rod on a 1979?? 4.5HP Merc Ser#7113295. I have a manual on the way but I would like to get the unit off and see what Water pump parts I need and get them on the way.I think that I may need to replace the upper seal as well as there was oil on the floor near the cavitation plate. Any information would be appreciated for this as well.Thanks

Did you get it apart? I was wondering the same thing only mine is a 1990

I am working on the same motor and was wondering if the 2 nuts are all thats holding the lower unit on? I have them off but the unit is still attached or stuck. Same question as the other, how to disconnect the shifter?<br /><br />Dan

Yes, i just did mine. The two nuts are all that hold the lower unit on. Mine came off easy. The shifter just comes off but sliding out. No problme with mine anyway. I think its best to be in forward when you take it apart.Then its both in forward when you renstall it.

I tipped it upside down and poured a quart of ATF in it, I will let it sit a weeek and try again.<br /><br />Dan
