4.5 Pull start rope won't recoil

I tried to start my 4.5 kicker today and the pull start rope broke. I tired it back together but now it won't recoil - just hangs out the front. When I take the cover off it winds back in by hand.
Any ideas?

your recoil spring has come loose. you can rewind it, a little tedious, or take it to the shop to be done.

I never did my outboard, but had a lawnmower that I had to do several times. Reason is wear where the end of the spring engages the engine.....it wears to the point that it comes out. Putting it back in is just a stopgap measure that will have to be repeated I'm going to bet you.....did me. Like if it wasn't worn, it wouldn't have failed you!

Might just bite the bullet, look at both the end of the spring and the housing where it mounts and buy replacemen parts for whichever is worn.

Re: 4.5 Pull start rope won't recoil

I'm finally getting a chance to have another look at this recoil spring problem. I can't seem to find a parts diagram of it on mercruiserparts.com. The serial number is 7216798 and says made in Canada. They don't list a 4.5 only a 4/5 or a 4 (4 stroke). All I can find are diagrams that show the recoil assembly attached to the top of the powerhead - mine is attached to the cowl and comes off with the cowl as one unit.
Also, is there a step by step method of rewinding the spring that I can use myself? The local shops are all booked up for 2 weeks or more right now.

Thanks

Thanks Harker,

That's exactly what I was looking for. Makes the job of rebuilding it so much easier with a parts diagram...
