I am looking for some opinions on placing a 4 barrel carburetor on a 2 barrel manifold. Will there still be a big difference in fuel consumption and engine response and performance? Or will I be wasting my money without switching to a 4 barrel manifold?

The reason why I am asking is because the boat is equipped with an automotive carburetor and I want to switch to a marine grade for safety and insurance reasons. Just was wondering if I should stay with a 2 barrel.

Yes you can buy an adapter to do what you are suggesting, but they really do not perform all that well, if you want a 4 barrel carb look for a manifold on Ebay for your application! It will give you a noticable change in two ways, More power, and more trips to the fuel dock!

LubeDude, what would be your best recommendation for a two barrel carburetor? Rochester, Holley, Carter...etc. I have heard that Holley's have a problem blowing the power valve on backfires and are manufactured with more plastic parts than other marine carburetors.

I would rather go with a 2 barrel...wouldn't have to change the manifold. However, Edelbrock salesmen claim you still get the performance and fuel economy even on a 2 barrel manifold with a 4 barrel carburetor. Guess the salesman are just doing their job :D !!!

Too bad Edelbrock doesn't make a 2 Barrel carb.

I have no recomendation on a two barrel carb, but I really like the edelbrock 4 Barrels, they are infinatly adjustable with a strip kit! A strip kit is a box of metering rods, jets and spings.

When I switched to a 4 bbl manifold and carb on my boat I found I acually have better economy at part throttle cruise. The only time my boat starts sucking fuel is when the vaccum secondaries open. I found the performance to be worth the cost so much so that I bought a 4bbl intake and carb for my new 2003 boat and will be switching as soon as the warranty runs out. But that was just how it worked out for me.
