4 cycle golf cart, reverse?

Today when I was working on my mom's golf cart, an old 2 cycle E-Z-GO, I started wondering how reverse works on the newer 4 cycle motor golf carts. On the 2 cycle motors, you just simply start the motor backward. It would have to be a very complicated cam and valve arrangment to run a 4 cycle motor in either direction, so I was wondering if anyone could tell me how the 4 cycle golf carts get their reverse. I'm just curious, I like to find out how things work, and I don't know anyone around here that has a 4 cycle cart that I can look at.

I guess I don't feel quite as in the dark now. If none of you guys have ever worked on a newer 4 cycle golfcart, I guess it's not common knowledge.
