I have a 2008 Chevy Colorado 2.9L 4cyl 2wd truck. Has a 3.73 rear end. I put a class III hitch on and wired up trailer lights. i also added a small helper spring. Do you guys think it will pull the 1990 18ft Sea Ray Bow Rider i bought? I am not worried about just on the road. I am fine with going slow but i am worried about at the ramp. What do you all think?

I wouldn't recommend it. Towing capacity of the 2.9L with Automatic is 2900-3300 lbs. I bet the boat alone weighs 2300-2500 without gear and driver/passenger. As for the ramp, better hope for a dry ramp with little % grade...

Does the trailer have brakes? With that kind of weight, you will definitely want to have extra help stopping.

By the way, nice looking boat and truck!!

What is the weight of your boat? What is the towing capacity of the truck? Just for information a helper spring does NOTHING to increase the towing capacity of a truck, it ONLY "helps" to tow a load level (not drop the back of the truck as much). The question is can the rig tow it legally and safely.

depends on the ramp is the only true answer for that...

Some ramps won't be a problem, get one that is too steep or covered in slime and you won't be moving. One tip though, get a couple hundred pounds of sandbags and keep them in the truck bed when towing. The weight will help you, and worse case, you can crack one open for traction on a slime covered ramp.

I wouldn't do it. What does your truck manual read as for as towing?
What does the boat weigh?
Looks like alot of boat for the truck.

Truck limit is 3300 as far as i know. it say to tow in 3rd which i already was aware of. Not sure on the exact weight of the boat. Been trying o find out but cant. The marine i am getting it from said about 2500lbs. Idk if i wanna try it or just say screw it and trad in the truck for a full size. I hate to cause i absolutely love my truck and have put at least 1k into it just this year with wheels, tires, hitch, aal and cd player

You can find your exact boat model and weight by using this link. http://www.iboats.com/Sea_Ray_Boats/bp/20br1400

Re: 4 cyl 2wd Towing 18ft Bow rider?

Thank you. Straight from tht link. The boat weighs approximately 2120 pounds with an empty fuel tank and without any gear or passengers.

I have pulled a Chriscraft boat with the same weight and length with a 1/2 ton dodge with 3.9L V6 2WD, 5 sp manual. The boat pushes the truck around a bit and the thing works like a dog to pull it in 4th gear. I have been disappointed and left stranded at the ramp do to lack of traction. (Have not attempted as I know the limitations and have also gotten stuck and had to be pulled out, open differential)

I personally would trade the truck for a 1/2 ton with a small V8 or another Colorado with the V6 and towing package.

This weight does not include the trailer.

You could take your rig to a truck scale (semi truck that is) unhook the boat and weigh it. We did that with our boat cuz we were curious what the boat, trailer, and gear weighed. My feeling is that you're gunna be putting a lot of strain on that whole powertrain. Our 18ft glastron is pushing the limits of our blazer. The engine isn't really a problem it's got enough power, but it's a lot of boat for the vehicle sometimes especially on longer trips. Lookin to upgrade to something bigger soon.

Re: 4 cyl 2wd Towing 18ft Bow rider?

I'll simply say that I tow our 18' bowrider on a single axle trailer with no trailer brakes with two different RWD vehicles with with open differentials and have never had a problem getting up a ramp or braking. Acceleration wise, my wifes '04 grand cherokee with the 190hp 4.0 I6 gets the job done, but struggles a bit on hills, my crown vic with 4.6V8 is the better tow vehicle of the two in my opinion/experience.

Hitch it up and try it that is the only way you will get an accurate answer since every situation is different . I pulled a very similar setup (Glasport 18.5 bowrider I/O) with an S-10, 2.2 litre, 5 speed for over 5 years. I pulled it 60 miles every weekend during boating season over some very hilly terrain. I had to use 3rd gear on some hills. The ramp I use is fairly steep and was rough on the clutch but never had an issue with traction. If I had had a colorado like yours with the bigger engine and automatic transmision it would have been much better. I guess the point I'm trying to make is if an old 2.2 S-10 could do it than your truck should be more than able. Factor in the rising fuel prices too! Also drive with caution....this is sound advice even if you pull with a F-250!

i am definitely going to try it. if it really cant handle i think i might just buy an old 80s chevy 1/2 or 3/4 ton to pull with for a couple grand. that would be cheaper than trading my truck for a decent half ton by the time the new truck would be a least a couple thousand more and get worse gas mileage overall and full coverage.

+1. You could tow that sucker with a 3/4 or 1 ton, but if you're driving as if you're not towing something you could be more dangerous than the guy towing at or near the limit of his tow vehicle. No hurry, just make it to your destination safely and don't impede the flow of traffic.. :)

When I was a kid my dad had an 18' aluminum sea nymph with an Evinrude 88 outboard.. He towed with an 84 s10, 2.8l 110hp, 5 spd manual.. I recall the routine to pull the boat up the ramp, I (preteen years) would drive the boat up on the trailer, attach the winch strap, then trim the engine up a bit and leave it in forward. When I saw his brake lights go off I'd goose it to help him just as he let the clutch out, then shut it off as soon as we were moving forward. We did what we had to with what we had, and I'll never forget the great times we had on the water together.

yup. For sure going to try it out. I think with the locker and if I need to, take backroads to avoid highway speeds I will be fine. I have already thought about the exact scenario you were talking about shabah haha. Cant wait to go get her. Just waiting for the weather to be a little more consistent before i get it dewinterized. When do you guys usually dewinterize i am in southern Missouri by springfield if you are familiar with the area at all. This week is suppose to be all in the 60s.
