I RECENTLY ACQUIRED A MINT 1957 7.5 EVINRUDE FLEETWIN. UN FORTUNATLEY THE TANK THAT CAME WITH THE MOTOR IS VERY DIRTY INSIDE. WHAT IS THE BEST METHOD TO CLEANING IT AND ARE THE PARTS AVAILABLE TO REBUILD THESE TANKS. I'M LOOKING FOR A NEW FITTING TO CONNECT IT TO THE MOTOR,ABOUT 6FT OF DUAL LINE AND PARTS TO REBUILD THE TANK AND THE PRESSURE PUMP. THANKS IN ADVANCE
TOMMY STEVENSON

Tommy,

I have a similar motor but it is a 5.5. They sell kits to referbish the tanks but I decided to convert mine to a fuel pump with single line tank. You might want to check out my 5.5 Tune Up Site and decide for yourself whether you want to fix up your old tank or convert to the newer system. Your 7.5 is verry similar to my 5.5.

http://www.outboard-boat-motor-repair.com/Johnson 5.5 HP Seahorse Outboard Boat Motor/default.htm

Re: 4 GAL DUAL LINE GAS TANK

Tommy,
With due respect to Tom, the dual line tanks have performed well for many people for many years. On a small motor on an open boat there is little practical danger. After all, the fuel pump on your car is most likely in the tank (if it's fuel injected) and the pressure in that fuel line is much higher than on the "old" kicker that you have.
FWIW, if it were me and I could find the repair kit, the line , and the engine fitting I would repair it and leave it stock.

Repair kits for those tanks are available through vintageoutboard.com. I concur with byordy - leave it stock....

- Scott

There's no real problem with the two-line tanks. Heck, they were used for many, many years. You can just rebuild yours, using one of the kits, and settle down for more years of happy boating.

As for the dirty interior, there are lots of ways to clean it. I like to use marbles in the tank, along with a little gasoline. I just shake the thing around for as long as it takes.

However, if there's lots of rust, look for another tank instead. They aren't that hard to find, really. There are always a couple on eBay.

As for the fittings, they can be a little hard to find, but you can fix your old ones by replacing the o-ring. No big deal.

There's a lot of joy in keeping an old outboard in stock condition, IMO.

Re: 4 GAL DUAL LINE GAS TANK

I don't mind you guys disagreing with me. I think that a people should consider all the options so
they can decide for themselves. As for myself, I am happy with my conversion because it works well and I can use the same tank for all my 2 cycle motors. If I wanted my motor to be a restoration to original, then I would keep the old tank but all I want to do is putt around with a smooth running motor and fish.

tommy
I think I know where a couple of 6 gal. dual line tanks are, don't know the condition. I have an old johny also, thought about the fuel pump conversion, went with the origanal tank. It works fine for me and cost less than converting, but I can use that tank only with that boat, the others are single line.

Re: 4 GAL DUAL LINE GAS TANK

The nice thing about having the two different tanks is that it's nearly impossible to mix them up. ALL dual line motors require a 24:1 mixture, while it's possible that some of your single-line motors need a 50:1 mix. I'd hate to see a motor get ruined because someone grabbed the wrong tank...

- Scott

Re: 4 GAL DUAL LINE GAS TANK

thanks guys for all the input. i have decided to clean and rebuild the stock tank. Spent 8 hrs or so yesterday cleaning it. started with lacquer thinner and a stick and after many flushings ended up grabbing 3 handfuls of 3/4 crushed stone dropping them in the tank with a 1/4 inch of gas and doing the hoo che gooche with the tank for about an hour. That really did the trick. found repair kit here in ma at a local evinrude shop. happy motoring all
Tommy
