I have a 1987 Force 4 HP Model 42F7A. It's like new; used twice in it's life before I took it out on the lake yesterday. I ran it for a couple of hours and ran great and started up okay. It idles (slow speed) decently when in gear; especially for a one cylinder motor. However, when I slow it down to a low speed when in gear and flip the switch into neutral the motor races to the point I'm afraid it might blow up. There is no change in the throttle position (side throttle). Than when I compensate and throttle it down it will stall. I began starting it in-gear so as not to have the motor race. Thinking the carb needs to be adjusted but I don't know how it will idle an lower than it does now before stalling. Is there only one adjustment on this carb? Am I missing something? thanks

Make sure the throttle plate in the carb is closing completely. I believe that the carb only had an adjustment for low speed mixture. The timing stop point controls the idle speed. Timing has more of an effect on engine speed that the carb.
