4 hp johnson dont seem to turn up

i got a 4 hp johnson i think 70s model white fiberglass lift off top green paint base no matter how i ajust the carb jets it dont do anything dont seem to turn up good and only runs a minute or two then dies but starts again only runs wide open but boggy gummed up carb or worse??? also does anybody know gas to oil mix and what kind of oil for the lower unit i could sure use the help

First off, Make sure it isnt running hot. If you can hold your hand on the block for at least 3-4 seconds while running then its probably ok,,,for now.
Other than that, Check the compression and report your findings here. Also make sure the spark will jump about 7/16" and is nice and blue. If it passes the aforementioned tests I would suggest picking up a service manual(available here on iboats) and rebuilding the carb.
Also, model&seiral# will help us dial in on the year. Fuel mix should be 50-1. The lower unit uses 80w90 marine lube.

i think i got it the 6 little exhaust holes in the stalk under the motor wer plugged up i cleand out the holes and it runs real nice but it seem to spray out a littlte water thruogh some of the is this normal
