Re: 4 hp Johnson lower end leak
Has,
I have found that it's easier to refill the lower unit by laying the motor on it's side with the fill hole point up. I fill the lower unit with fresh lube to a level just below the bottom thread of the fill hole. Be sure to replace the washer on the fill screw too. If this washer leaks, water can enter the lower unit.

As for the 'oily/water goop', it's usually normal. It's a bleeder hole to allow excess by products of exhaust and water to drain from the midsection of the motor. Looking at the lower unit fluid, when you change it, will tell if you have water intrusion into the lower unit. The sources of water can come from a faulty prop shaft seal, fill washer leaking, or as you mention the bottom end drive shaft seal. If in doubt, a simple adaptor (at the fill hole) and a bicycle pump can be used to pressurize the lower unit, submerge in a tank and look for bubbles.
