A elderly friend recently gave me a 1996 4 HP Johnson that he hadn't used since 2000. He couldn't find the operator manual and he can't remember if he drained the carburetor when he last put it in his basement. I have a few questions.

Does this outboard have a tilt feature and if so, how does one use it?

I'm going to fog the cylinders and turn over the engine without plugs. I'll install new plugs, change the lower unit gear oil and lubricate the chasis. Could I do harm to the outboard trying to start it then or should I take this outboard to a Johnson mechanic for a carburetor overhaul and new impeller before trying to start it?

Thanks in advance.

Ahoy, retire66.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Change the impeller in the water pump and overhaul the carb yourself, retire66.

Not that difficult once you get your Service Manual (from www.outboardbooks.com).

It will cost a lot less than paying someone else to mess with your treasure.

It will provide you with a personal relationship with the finest small outboard ever made.
