I am a couple of weeks away from trading in an old two stroke for a new four stroke 40 or 50 hp. Can anyone lead me to information / comparison's between four stroke engines such as YAMAHA, SUZUKI, and HONDA. Does anyone have any comments as to their preferences? They all seem to be excellent engines. I have checked with some dealers and they all sing the praises of their respective brands. I have checked the brands websites, but need info from REAL people. Thanks!

My brand prejudice is for Honda, but my technical prejudice is for EFI in a 4 stroke.<br /><br />That means Suzuki or Mercury.<br /><br />The others are excellent engines, but EFI makes too much difference to consider them.<br /><br />Good luck. :)

Re: 4-Stroke Comparison

I have to agree with JB. This year I bought a new 50HP merc 4 stroke and love it. I was very close to purchasing a Honda. While I'm sure I would have been very happy with the Honda (or any other 4 stroke for that matter), the research I did on this site made me a believer in EFI. :D <br /><br />No choke, instant start cold or hot, this motor is a dream! Trust what the guys say on this site say, "EFI does for outboards, what it does for car engines."<br /><br />Hope this helps with your decision<br />cheers<br /> :D

Re: 4-Stroke Comparison

You didn't tell us what type of boat you have. If you are repowering a pontoon boat, I would have to say the obvious choice is a Merc 40\50 EFI 4-stroke with the Bigfoot option. It has 30% larger gears for durability, a longer shaft to eliminate cavitation issues and swings a much larger prop than the competition. By the way, the 60 HP Merc has been touted as the all around favorite in the midsize power class and doesn't cost that much more. Hope this helps.
