I have 1996 Johnson 15 hp 4- stroke. It has been an awesome motor for the last few years. It's time for a service. I can't figure out which is the drain for the engine crankcase oil. I am trying to post pics with my phone through photobucket, but i keep missing something. Anyway there are two flat head plugs on the starboard side of the LU. I know these are for the LU oil. There is also a phillips head screw/plug beside the bottom LU drain plug. Then on the port side up in the midsection is another flat head plug. I assume one may be for the shift linkage but i am unsure. Any help would be apreciated. I will try to post pics later.

If the flat head plug is just below the power head on the port side it is mostly likely the drain plug for the crankcase. Where's your owners manual ??

Maintaining Johnson/Evinrude 9.9 part 1 scroll way down in this article until you get to changing the oil. It explains how to do it.
On the photobucket posting of pics . . . open the pic, click on the paperclip looking thingy at the top of the pic and copy the last link which says "img" then paste that into your thread and the pic will show up. Do this on a computer or laptop. I can't get it to work on my ipad.

No owners manual yet. I've been busy with other projects that include a little tri-hull and I just got a 94 starcraft 16. I figured it was simple, something I could easily find on internet. With no luck. this site has taught me a lot since I found it in 2010. Thanks for the link expidia. I remember that same article when I got my first motor. My 68 20 hp. it's in the garage now needing a few little things. I fell in love with this four stoke. port side it is, I'm glad I didn't try harder last weekend to get that Phillips head screw out.
now this new filter and oil that I've had for 3 weeks can get installed.

That link posted is for 2 strokes, Leg oil.
First, without a manual, DON"T GUESS!. I got a 5HP Honda 4S, and the crank drain is UNDER the motor, hex screw, just inside the lower cowling. Where most I ever seen are. Make sure ya know which one FOR SURE before twist the wrong thing, and get a major headache.

It was time for service at the end of the first season.
