4-Stroke Questions

I’m looking for some helpful information before I purchase an outboard motor. I’m looking to buy a 9.9 or so hp outboard for a 16 foot alum boat. My questions are: what is the benefit of a 4 stroke? Which models in this hp range are the best? Which models can be easily converted to future remote control and has anyone done this conversion. What should I look-out for if I purchase a used 4-stroke (besides the obvious) ? Thanks for the help.

Re: 4-Stroke Questions

The benefits are increased fuel economy, quietness, and smoothness. I have a 1999 Honda 15 (love it!) that was converted to remote with a dealer package of brackets that ran me about $70. I don't know which brand is the best. I suppose length of warranty and dealer support in your area are important things to consider. Used? Check gear oil, motor oil, compression. Basically scope it out like any other outboard. For a 16' I would lean more toward the 15 than a 9.9 if your local waters have no hp restrictions, but that's just my opinion.

I agree with Fouled Plug - go with the 15 HP if your boat is rated for the HP and you can afford it.

All 4 stroke brands seem to be bulletproof in the small HP ratings, since they have been made for many years now. You will save enough in fuel/oil to pay for the engine, if you use it very much. You should not need over a 3 gallon fuel tank either.

I would have no problem buying used, as you said, check the obvious (motor generally clean, doesn't leak or burn oil, good compression, no water in lower unit, starts easily, no corrosion, prop shaft not bent, motor charges (if electric start), etc.
