I am looking for some advice on using synthedic oil in a 4 stroke outboard. I have a Johnson 140 2003 which is coming up on its first oil change.
I have never changed oil in an outboard before only auto,s. Is there anything different that I should know about?

I am considering Mobile 1 synthedic oil, I have read about its advantages in auto's but I dont want to get into any trouble with the Johnson if I use it. The manual I got with the motor does not tell you much as they call it a dealer service routine.

I have to get the filter for them. SHould I just let them do it? Thanks Dan.

My conclusions from previous chats on this is that syn is great but not to be used for storage. Inside rusts. So a foolproof way may be to go with syn blend.

One of the advantages of Mobil 1 is that change periods may be extended, but you need a ECM that monitors engine oil temp and usage to determine when to change. My ML320 does that and because of my extended highway usage it sometimes runs the oil over 10K miles before changing. It does require 100% synthetic.

In our 4 stroke outboards we change oil at 100 hours regardless of usage. Suzuki (who also made your Johnny) says Mobil 1 is fine in my DF70, but I must change it on schedule. My dealer says it is a waste of money.

I haven't heard anything about internal rusting due to synthetic oil.

I use Mobil 1 in all my 4 stroke machines because I trust it. I have had no oil related problems. I recommend it if you can live with the extra expense. :)

Moving this to Outboards.

Dan180cc: I agree with JB 100%. Here is the way I look at the expense invoved, for about the same money You Don,t have to worry about the oil breaking down. I still change oil just like the book says, the syn oil looks as good as the day it when in. I now use a fram oil filter for my df115. You might want to hold off on using non suzuki parts until you get her broke in real good. The first oil change is done by the Dealer at 20 hrs. Here is a link, look around You will find a video on how to change oil. http://www.suzukimarine.com/sr03/df140/index.html Good Luck, let us know how ya make out.

Hi Dan. I have the 115 and did the first oil and filter myself. I'm using Chevron Supreme 10-40 because I have confidance in it,and I am using it in another OB,a 4-wheeler,and a rider mower. I'm not saying its the best but it works for me. To get to the oil filter on mine, you have to remove the STBE side cover(no idea what stbe means). I bought a Suzuki service manual that covers my motor in detail. I am really pleased with the motor, how 'bout you?

JRJ: So far so good, I really enjoy the df115. Of course after 12 yrs of running a force 125 I am like a kid in a candy store. The big bonus for Me is the fact that My wife who use to get sea sick because of the fumes from the Force, now enjoys going fishing. This spring I Changed the Oil, spark plugs, low pressure gas filter, lower unit gear oil, racor water seperator and seviced the prop shaft. I was shocked to see so much junk in the filter, never got up into the injecters, thank goodness. By the way STBE stands for Starboard. Stil waiting for Clymer to come out with a repair manual for the df115. If I have to I,ll break down and buy the shop manual from Brownspoint.com. Glad to hear that You are making out OK. Good Luck.

Dan
