im looking at a new 16 foot john boat with a 40 horspower 30 hp output, yamaha 4 cylinder engine for fishing and hunting the missouri river and maybe a steelhead trip to idaho, and british columbia salmon fishing... i dont want to be underpowered, but also dont want more boat than i can handle as i am older.. i need just enough for three people and day gear for fishing or duck hunting and fuel. im worried about overworking this engine or looseing fuel economy by using only the higher rpms? i wont be running it all day or even that much as i will be hunting on an island or drift fishing.. . thanks for any input.. dave (more info :im looking at buying this new boat,, a jet, and 30 is on the engine cover.. i should add that im at about 4000 ft elevation which will also reduce power... the boat is 16 foot crestliner john boat, aluminum, 270 pounds, center console , flatboat with flat bottom, and modified v in the front.. there is no chanel,it is ribbed on the bottom by forming about 1 1/4 inch square ribs going the length of the boat.. the back bottom is square.. it will haul with one to three people, not much gear for bird hunting and flyfishing... any help so i dont make a 6 year mistake on payments would be appreciated..dave

I don't have any experience with jet drives or high altitude operation. But a propeller driven 30hp on a 16 ft Mod V would work just fine. If the jet drive delivers thrust comperable to a propeller driven outboard, it would be approximately a 25 mph boat at sea level.

From the little research I did, a while ago, setting up a jet boat is allot more involved than a prop boat. There is no changing the pitch to adjust for weight/load. Motor, boat, and load, need to be carefully matched. I remember something about a modified v in back is better than flat bottom, too. It is probably worth finding someone that does these river jet-boat set-ups, that has allot of experience. A traditional boat shop that may only sell a couple of jets a year, might not be the best at selecting the right combination for you.

I don't think you will be happy with the performance in that HP range. I have used a 16' G3 (similar)a great deal, it has a Yamaha 60 (40 pump) and it is a very good combination for 2 people, with three it's slow and thats without much gear. A 40 would be too small for more than 1 person in the boat, it would be wide open all the time just to stay on plane, if it would plane.
I have a 16' with a 90hp (60 pump) and it works very well, but it's definitely not over powered.

ondarvr, thanks for the info.. i think also the other poster was right, im talking to some unkowledgable sales people.. they mean well, are nice guys but unknowingly set up a real dog, they still think it will be fine.. ill look for a boat and motor that will handle the 60-40 range well.. any suggestions that would be good for fishing, hunting, and not give me alot of trouble.. ?? what boat maker, and what make moter serves the jets well..?? i also learned today that a wider 16 foot is better for fishing/ hunting so i get away from the tipping problems... ive been asked to drive such a boat in great falls montana by a dealer, so i belive they know about what thier talking about... thanks dave..

I just traded my 50/35 Yamaha Jet in last week.
I live in Great Falls Montana. I had it on a 15 foot smokercraft semi-v with a jack plate added.
I put in wood floors between the seats and a deck on front. I had a 24 powerwinch and 35 lb richter anchor on front with a minkota bow mount motor.
Also I had two 24 series batteries up front and a small garden tractor battery for my fish finder. Had 2 6gallon gas cans inback plus all my fishing gear and the wife. Got 26=27 mph according to my lowrance gps. Going back up the Missouri I got from 22- 23 mph. I up graded to a 19 foot roughneck with a 90 hp Johnson . What a difference. If i can answer any questions let me know. I dealt with dave at Missouri River Marine in Great Falls and they beat the other local by mucho dollars.

The G3 with a Yamaha 60-40 pump is a very good combo, it's light, handles well and is very good on fuel. Most of the wide 16' flat bottom aluminum boats will work well, the right motor is the most important part in this package. Don't be afraid of more HP with a pump, the 30% loss of power with a pump is on the optimistic side, it's probably more like 40%. On small boats like these, people use 2 strokes as jets more than 4 strokes, the weight of a 4 stroke on these small boats can make big difference.

is a g3 a model or brand? what exactly what model are you talking about. im very unknowedgable about these.. is the 60-40 yamaha your talking about a 2 stroke or 4 stroke? i think a 16 foot will be enought for me (i hope).. boy this is great info.. just what i need.. i only trust salesmens statements when they are backed up by guys like you who have nothing to gain from your input.. i think if i can get a well balanced 60-40 on a good 16 foot boat ill be happy.. it should be the best of all worlds, speed, price, usability, and not too big for beaching on a shallow island to fish or hunt, with three people max.. maybe more on a fun trip for the family on a nice day not going real far.. are these type boats ok on lakes like for salmon fishing with an electric trolling motor?.. i know im streaching it here, as waves on low sided boats are not very good... .. .. dave..

G3 is a brand, the 60-40 is a 2 stroke. Check the G3 website, but there's a bunch of aluminum boats in that size that will work.

I have a Merc. 50 jet on my 16' Alumaweld. I fish rivers in Michigan for Steel & Salmon on a regular basis. As indicated above I get 23 mph tops which is plenty for my needs however I only carry two on my boat. You can't load up a boat like this down but with two guys, two batts, oars and a 70lb anchor & winch I find this combo great for river fishing. 40hp may be a little light for a 16' hull but I do see many with this setup and they seem to fair well with no complaints. You won't haul three very well though. I think that a 60/40 would be prime for what you need in carrying three people and it will give you the power and versatility your looking for.
