I have a 1997 30 HP 2 cyl 2 stroke Mercury that I want to change over to a 40 HP. I see the only difference is that the 40 uses a different carb and the reeds are "different". Looking at pics of the 30 and 40 HP reeds, I don't see a difference between the two. I was able to find a service manual for a 2000 40 hp, and it shows the reed stopper height for the 30, but says "non adjustable" for the 40. In the service manual, the 40 shows no reed stoppers, but pictures of new and used reed plate assemblies clearly show they have stoppers.

Does anyone know what the deal is with this? I don't want to spend a bunch of money on the 40 HP reed plate only to find out the difference is the stopper height, and that was something I could have done for free to my 30 HP plate.

Thanks!

All you have to do is change to the 40hp retainer ..its a round disk vs the 30 fan type, add the 40 carb and you got it.

Thanks for the reply. I see the newest update to the 40 HP reeds now have the fan style stop. Could I just open up my reed stops on the 30 or should I spring the $11 for the disks? I haven't been able to find any pics of a 40 HP reed plate with just the disks installed which is why I'm questioning it.
