So I went to remove the lower unit for inspection and the drive shaft will not come out of the motor. The lower unit came right off but that dang shaft seems to be stuck in the upper portion of the motor. Is there some kind of trick to removing these??? Havent come across this problem yet...

Thanks for the advice!!

Driveshaft is probably rusted to the crankshaft due to someone putting it back together without the O-ring at the top of the driveshaft. If you can get some penetrating oil up there, it may free the driveshaft. But gravity is working against you. If you can turn the engine upside down, it makes the job easier. How did you get the L/U off with the driveshaft stuck?

I bet the key in the waterpump housing is damaged. I had the same problem. Scrapped the motor couldn't get the shaft out period. All I can suggest is to remove the powerhead and apply heat to the shaft, but try BP blaster or PB blaster( can't remember the right name) Once removed though the spline in the crank might be scrap because it's fine spined. Good luck.
