40 hp carb problem

I have a 1969 Johnson 40 hp. I am having trouble with the solenoid on the carb. It keeps burning up. 2 @ $116.50 ea. this is killing me. Anyone have any ideas? what is the purpose and can it be removed.....lol ? I have another carb from another Johnson engine that does not have the solenoid on it.

are you refering to the electric choke? by burning up do you mean its literally smoking and burning out? do you use the auto choke or do you manually pull it to start. if its staying energized itll burnout but youd notice your choke wide open. Not 100% on your motor but my 70 has 3 positions lock auto and manual. if its staying energized only way you wouldnt notice durin running is by manually using the chaoke and pushing it all the way in locking out the auto choke. So even if its energized it wouldnt open the choke.
