I bought this with the owner saying it needed a new impeller. He said no problem will change it. He took the lower unit apart to find out a water tube had split over the winter. He never finished it before I got to pick it up. (he passed away) He gave me a literal basket case. All parts and bolts in a little basket. Of which ther are some (19) little roller bearings. Not a clue where they go. Went to order a manual but they are out of stock. Found a diagram for a 68 but don;t see these rollers(pins) anywhere!! HELP!!
Thanks, I did numerous searches here, some really great stuff just nothing I needed to help.

See if any of this looks familiar. I'm thinking #53 or 54

Thanks, none of the drive case was opened. I'm now thinking it is the pinion bearing, another member PM'ed me that idea. It may be a different year lower unit than the original 40HP. Like he said the older units had bearings in a cup, like these. So not knowing what the heck I have may just be a parts motor now!!

Re: 40 hp Evinrude 1966 lower unit problem.

I was just offered a lower unit off a 70-71 motor. Electric shift as well, for a really good price. Does anyone know if it would fit my 1966 motor? Or a place to find out if it will? Evinrude themselves?
Thanks for all of the help.

If your lower unit looks like the one in the diagram, it is NOT electric shift, it is mechanical shift. Electric shift would have a single lever and push buttons to shift.

Mine does have that controller, Only difference between mine and the diagram is the wire running though the middle. And the wires for the gear shift in the drive case( not sure of the name) where the prop is.
Sorry should have seen that but have been looking at diagrams for a week now. I found mine on a website. Still doesn't help as the lower unit on the motor isn't the same year as the motor....

Guess what, my control only has one lever, no buttons. Also is a Johnson. Also the start lever is broken!!! Time to regroup.....

Sounds like the wrong control. Attached is a pic of a Selectric shift control. And a pic of a Selectric shift lower unit. Note: the selectric shift does not have a split case like a mechanical shift.

Thats a little different looking lower unit.
The control isn't like that at all. Just one lever forward and reverse. Guy I talked to at the shop said some of the Johnson controls were electric. Limit type switch in them to shift in forward when pushed forward and reverse when pulled back.??? Not sure. I don't have the knowledge to dispute or fix for that matter. Listed it as a parts motor. Going to buy one tomorrow from the shop with controls, and a warranty. Then I know what I've got.

Re: 40 hp Evinrude 1966 lower unit problem.

OMC did offer a single lever shifter for the mechanical shifted motors (5? through 40 horse) for many years but it was uncommon. It used two cables and it controled shifting & throttle without using any pushbuttons. I think it was offered from 1958 through the 1970s at least. It was more costly than the twin level Simplex / Shipmaster.

Look at the photo below from the 1974 OMC Accessories brochure. The single lever mechanical shift is labeled as #1. This is for use on the Evinrude Bigtwin 40 among others. The Lark 40 was the electric shift and used the special pushbutton shift (it was not shown in the 1974 accessories brochure even though the Selectric / Electramatic was produced through 1970).
