40 hp evinrude problems

what would cause my motor to miss when i get in semi rough water or i go over someones wake. i have a '68 40 hp evinrude mod 40873A and ser. E04702 ? when i am in smooth water it runs fine.

Are you sure its missing and its not the prop revving up from being out of the water?

loose electrical connects, or bare, cracked wires shorting out.
