I have a 1992 Evinrude model = te40elenj on my pontoon. I have adjusted the shift linkage several times and I cant get it to go into both forward and reverse gear and not pop in and out of either. I adjust it one way and it wont stay in gear the other way. So far I tightened up some slop in some linkage pins and that helped but did not completely fix. I then changed out the shift cables and that made it even better but not completely fixed. The other day I was looking at the engine and noticed the attached . The engine is neutral but the metal ball is not in between the 2 humps. Hence it is not infront of the hump when in forward and behind the hump when in reverse. My father in law has the exact same engine and the ball is between the two humps when in neutral and in front or behind when in reverse or forward. I am guessing this helps hold the shift lever in place as this device is connected directly to the shift lever at the back of the engine going to the lower unit. What causes this to get out of alignment and how do I get it back. I can not see anywhere to adjust this. Help

You have most likely a loose or worn shift arm. It under the carbs and manifold
