40 hp evenrude will not idle down, checked for vacume leaks and had no luck, cleaned the carbs and again no luck, the engine is ideling at approx 2000 rpm and was normally at 1000, seems to run ok other than ideling too fast, any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

I believe the engine is a 1988, all link, sync, and throttle points had been loosened and it still continues to idle at approx 2000 rpm, I have found that the timing is advanced approx 35 degrees and the key-way on the flywheel is broke, could this be what is causing the problem ? I am in the process of replacing the key-way

Loosen all your sync & link points including your throttle cable and tell us what happens. And let us know what year it is.

Good luck!

My 115 did that, the therostats where stuck open, causing it to stay at high idle. Might be your problem to.
