I just bought a 16' starcraft boat that came with a 40 hp Gale Sovereign outboard model # 40de14b, serial # 820604. The person that i bought it from didn't know anything about the motor. Im just wondering what year it is and if it uses the same wireing harness as evinrude and johnson.

Re: 40 Hp. Gale Sovereign

It is a 1961. Except for the hood, everything on it was used on Johnson and Evinrudes, though not necessarily the same year. In fact it more closely resembles the J/E 40hps of the 1970's

Wiring harness is the same...sort of. The Gale has an electric choke, for one thing.

Most important part's will match up, such as water pump, carb. kit ,ign. The after-market engines'. Gale, Buccaneer, Sea King, had many part's made in Galesburg, Ill., Hence the name, As I recall they had other part's made at this plant. Gas tank's, fuel hose, plus other small fitting's. Other's can help me out here.

Re: 40 Hp. Gale Sovereign

R.Johnson, that is sort of correct. Actually all of the parts for all 3 lines J/E/Gale were all made in the same places. For instance Evinrude made crankshafts. Johnson made die castings. Then they shipped them all back and forth and assembled their own engines. That is till they also started making each other's engines. I took a tour of the Evinrude plant in Milwaukee in 1967 and there were green Johnsons all over the place. Then they started making some of them in Belgium. Now, Lord knows where they are made.
