Tuning up the engine on a boat I just bought, its a TJ40ELESR. Sat for five years with zero attention. Got it running but seemed a bit sluggish out of the water so didn't even try to put it in. Kinda suprised it started so quick and had water pressure.

What I've done so far. The lower unit is off getting a new skeg welded on. Going to change the water pump, plug seals and fresh oil. Also found the plastic piece the shift linkage rod goes through to the lower unit leaking, ordered parts to reseal. Pulled the carbs off and rebuild. (Sierra carb kits worked awesome!) New spark plugs on order.

Is there anything else I should do while I have the carbs off? Anything else I should check to make sure this thing is going to go when I put it in the water? One other thing I noticed is the vacuum line going from the crankcase to the intake manifold has some old gas in it (looks brown). Should I spray it out with some brake clean to help remove?

Thanks in advance, Kyle

Your motor number indicates that the motor is a 1990. It would be a good idea to replace all fuel lines. Ethanol eats up that old rubber.

Keep the old float needles to your carbs. Some new kits have rubber tipped needles that people have reported to stick. "Sometimes far away from shore"

I like that vintage year of motor, and with proper maintenance, it should be a good motor for quite awhile.

Rubber tips were in it when disassembled and it was easy to tell someone was in them before. The Sierra came with new needles and seats both brass I think, which I did use. So rubber= bad, brass= good?

Thanks for the reply.

Ditto on the fuel lines. Old rubber and ethanol, definitely not a good combination!
