40 HP johnson wiring

I recently purchased a 40 hp Johnson with an OMC wiring harness. It has an 8 pin red coupling. It has been cut and I am going to replace it with my mercury 50 that runs real good. Does anyone know which wire colors go where or where to find the info? I think it is a 1990 or so vintage. The previous owners ran it aground and snapped the lower unit off, but they saved the keg. Thanks

there is no telling. usually controls are not compatible.
