40 hp mariner

i have purchased a used boat with a 40 hp mariner, has oil injected on cover, cant find a oil reservoir, has probably been removed, the motor s/n is (6e9l431997) any help on these matters would be appreciated.

The L in that number is really throwing me off. Please double check the number.

sorry. can not trust the bill of sale. correct s/n. is 639 L 431997. may be wrong cover,
