I recently bought a brand new 2001 40 HP 2 cycle Mercury Outboard that I have put no more than 6-8 hours of run time on it before it started to have problems. I am able to start the motor at high RPMs but as soon as I drop the throttle back to shift into gear it just dies out. Even just a slight drop in the throttle causes it to die out. I put new plugs in figuring they might have been fouling up from the extra oil required during the break in period. But that made no difference. Any suggestions as to what may be causing my problem?

Call the dealer and tell him it's giving you grief. I would advise against turning-up the idle adjustment, as it is still under warantee.
