I was out yesterday and noticed an electrical burning smell.
Opened the cowl and the center of the regulator was totally melted emitting yellow smoke . I let it cool for a moment, started the engine and went back to the house with engine running fine, and no smoke.

Any ideas on what could cause this??

Thanks,
Joe

A faulty rectifier/regulator would cause it.

Got a SN for your motor? Even a year? 2 Stroke? 4 Stroke?

Don,

It is a 2000 40 ELPTO, 2 stroke

I've ordered a new regulator, but I'm worried that when I put it on the same thing might happen. Don't want to throw $100 down the drain if possible!!!!

Thanks for the help

Merc rectifiers seem to have a tough time with AGM batteries, which have a very high charging demand.

sophomoric design.
