40 HP Tohatsu shift rod

How do you disconnect the shift rod from the lower unit 2005 Tohatsu 40 tiller? I took the lower unit off, but the shift rod wont let it come down.

Look at where the lower shift rod meets the upper shift rod...Knock out one of the two pins in the coupler.

Personally find much easier to disconnect the upper one.
