I am looking for the wiring diagram for this motor. The original harness has been altered. I now need to understand what goes to what, so I can replace the wiring. I will also need to replace the started bendix.

Thanks
I don't think the starter's bendix is available as a seperate unit. What's the matter with it?
The wiring diagram is in the service manual. If you're going to be working on your engine, you're going to need it. There's more in it than we can ever cover here. The best one is the factory one, and you can get a reprint from one of the following places:
TheOutboardWizard
Mastertech
Marine Engine
Ken Cook
They're more expensive then the Seloc one, but they're worth it. Sometimes they turn up on ebay for around 1/2 the price, but I don't see any right now. If you don't want to buy one yet, you can often borrow one from your local library.

I did draw one up for my '62 28hp which should be similair to your '60 40hp. The wire colours and placement of connectors, etc, may be different but the actual connections should be the same:
Schematic, Click here.
Hope this helps!

PS - Did you manage to get the L/U off?
Paul,

Thanks for the schematic, very helpful. I will start looking for a manual. I just removed the lower unit, to eliminate the long shaft spacer. Now I will need a shorter shift rod. My shopping list is growing.
