I have a 40 Mariner on a 15' bass boat. My wife and son had the boat out Friday will I was at work, they said the boat was running fine down the lake and it sounded like something got caught and slowed down. They shut it off lifted the engine to see if the had got caught up in a rope or something , but nothing was on or around the prop. When they restarted it sounded like something was wrong. Later I got there turned it over and there is a strange noise coming from under the flywheel. Almost like a banging as it spins over. Have not pulled it apart yet , but did a quick compression check and it was fine. Any ideas?

yea don't run it untill you know what it is (atleast not above an idle). uh if its a four stroke drain the oil and look for debris. even get a strong magnet and sift through the oil to see if it picks up anything.

how many cylinders does it have? if more then one then i could say its something with the cam or valve train. may still me fixable at this point but that sucks!
