I have a 40 outboard, and when you put it in the water it runs good, and idles in gear good, but when you get out on the open water to open it up, it stalls. Now I put a new fuel pump on it, still did the same problem, so i put an electronic fuel pump and still no success. I also cleaned the carb. Any Ideas?

Re: 40 stalls

What year and model 40. That would help somewhat.

A rudimentary guess would be that it may not be firing on all cylinders.

Start by checking spark and compression on all cyls.

Make sure that you are getting fuel to all of the cylinders as well.

It's probably an 80' something I would guess. Am not completely sure. It is a two cylinder 2 stroke engine, if that helps identify it. Thanks for your help.

Re: 40 stalls

I will get rid of the fuel pump, it was just an experiment. We just purchased the engine last fall, so I have no clue how the previous owner took care of it. I put new plugs in, rebuilt the water pump and fuel pump and cleaned the carbs. That is all that I've done to it in the time I've had it. I put new fuel lines on, due to the older ones cracking, so they are definatly clear, and the vent on the tank is clear also. Thanks guys for your help, i have been stuck on this issue for a while.
