I am starting to think OMC stands for O My Christ (why did I buy this thing)

So I had some help from a buddy putting the sterndrive on the boat. I have the fully mechanical sterndrive. When I shift from N position to either Forward or Reverse position and I hear a click click click then the engage . Sounds like if you dont put the clutch all the way in on a stick shift car kind of.
Is one of the cables out of adjustment? Please let me know if there is a way to adjust this so I dont mar up some gears.
Any and all info is appreciated. Just want to fix a small issue before it becomes once again another mind boggling serious issue.

A little bit of bump and grind on the clutch dog is typical. Without hearing it, it's hard to say. Generally, if you're below 750 to 800 rpms and it clicks on in it'll not cause wear of significanance. Make sure you are topped off with gear oil in upper and lower. If it's going in and out of gear in both forward and reverse, and not jumping out of gear, and your rpms are low, it's quite probably adjusted right.

second part of "Installation of cable in Shift Converter" and it's in the table of contents under "Lower Gearcase"
