I just picked up a 400 sbc from a 77 Blazer for my 87 Bayliner/OMC. What would be the better heads to use, the original 400,s or the 5.7 OMC,s?

The heads off your 350 will need a trip to the MachineShop before they can be used(they need Steam holes added)..............
I'd have the 1s off the 400 cleaned up,+ sharpen the valves..... then use them.......

Re: 400 OMC

Thanks for the reply, Bondo. I was flipping back through some earlier post and seen one from Rodbolt that said the 5.7s could suck a valve if they were lugged. Hopefully the older 400 heads are more durable. I'm gonna take your advice and clean up the 400s. Thanks again!

You may want to check combustion chamber size. The 400 SBC always used 76cc combustion chambers to keep the compression ratio down.

If the 5.7 heads you have have smaller chambers, the compression ratio will go up dramatically. This will cause detonation (pinging) and death of the engine.

This site lists combustion chamber sizes based on casting numbers: http://www.mortec.com/
mike
