402--plugs

I have a 40 hp Mercury 402 which I believe is a 1972. I replaced the plugs last summer with NGK surface gap plugs. It has been running crappy and dies when advancing the throttle quickly. On the possibility that the plugs are the reason I wondered if a regular plug could be used instead and if others are doing this. I have a dozen or so small motors but this is the only Merc and I know nothing about plugs for it.
