I have a 1975 40hp evinrude, is there anyway to start it without the controls? I am having a hard time finding controls for this engine but I want to start it up and see how it runs before I put any money into it, I got it for free from a friends garage, it was just sitting around. Thanks

Yep, just jump the starter. If it has no controls or wire harness hooked up to it it will start unless you have other issues. If it does start you will have to choke it or pull sparkplug wires to kill it.

"Jump the start" can you elaborate on that? Do I have to hook it up to a battery? Where would I put the rope to start pulling?

Use jumper cables from a battery. Put the positive to the starter post and the negative to a bolt on the engine block.

Hi there, Make sure your motor is in water. If you do not have a starter you need to choke it and start cranking. No conections are needed at the harnest. Simply choke it to stop it if it starts. If it had a starter and it works, Choke it, connect the negative lead from the battery to a good ground on the motor ( any solid metal part which does not move) and touch the positive battery lead to the positive terminal on the starter. Carefull as you will get sparks flying from the terminal so make sure you have no fuel around that area. Motor should turn over and start if you have the choke on. If not make sure you have a good spark and fuel.
Good luck Phil.

I was looking at it and not sure where the positive connection is on the motor?

The best way would be to buy or improvise a remote starter switch. Mine is an old Fiat windsheild washer switch with about 20" wires with clips on the end like come on a battery charger. Hook one clip to the positive lead on the solenoid and the other lead to the small terminal on the solenoid that is NOT grounded.

Hook your battery to the positive lead of the solenoid, not the starter. This way you don't have any sparks flying which could ignite fuel from the carbs which will probably leak :D

ummm, silly question.....

Is it electric start or manual.

You did not say.

Either way, you may need to spray some pre-mix (fuel with oil mixed in) down the throat of the carb as the carb is probably gummed up and would need to be cleaned.

Is it possible that this motor is both electric and manual? I can see a manual starting sequence under the hood of the engine, but pretty sure it can be started by key also

I killed my battery once out fishing, but I got the motor started by wrapping a rope around the flywheel. Started easily, but of course the engine was still warmed up. Mine was a 70 hp and it pulled over pretty easy, you 40 shouldn't be a problem. yes it is possible to have an electric start and manual pull cord, but if your motor has been sitting for a while, take these guys advice and hook up a battery as you will be doing a LOT of pulling otherwise

Here is another tip. On your starter which is installed next to your flywheel there should be a red lead . That is your positive. Connect one jumper cable between this lead and the positive on your 12V battery. Connect the other lead to a good solid metal part on the motor. Then touch that negative lead to the battery. The motor should turn over. Your motor should have both an electric and a manuel pull cord on it. By doing this kind of a hook up, you keep the sparks from flying at the motor. You will get some sparks at the battery however so make sure it is well sealed as hydrogen gases are highly explosive also. I never bothered with a switch but it is the best thing to do.

By electric and manuel pull cord I mean an electric starter and a manuel pull cord. That pull cord maybe a retractable like on my 1964 40hp or the type where you have to wrap the cord around the flywheel everytime. The things they do to save money some times...
