40HP Evin. Cooling Question

I recently bought a 1984 40HP Evinrude Elec. It pumps like crazy out the telltale. I'm a little concerned because I don't see water coming out anyplace else. I thought it would come out through the prop like a 35 I once had. I only ran it at idle for a couple minutes. The water coming out the telltale was never more than luke warm. The water supply was a water flusher on a hose. The block was quite warm to the touch, not scalding hot. Am I worrying about nothing?

Hi JS
Yes, I believe you are. You need to run the motor long enough for the t-stat to open. Of course if the thing starts to melt down before this occurs, then maybe your motor does have a problem.

Unless you know for sure that the water pump was replaced in the past couple of years it would be a good idea to replace it strong stream out the telltale or not.

Thanks for the answers. I can't seem to locate the thermostat on this thing. I've changed them on smaller motors and their locations were usually obvious. Is the thermostat buried and less convenient to get at on this motor?

js5278,I believe the T/stat and pressure relief valve on your engine is below the bottom cylinder and requires removal of the head cover to access.

Yep. Just picked up the Clymer at the local library and see that the "water cover" needs to be removed, which means the coils have to come off, along with about 10 bolts that have never been removed... It was so much easier on my 20hp.

Maybe I'll run it one more time a little longer and see if maybe the engine just needs to warm up some more before the thermostat opens. Don't want to cook anything though.

Re: 40HP Evin. Cooling Question

So after doing some reading and staring at the engine, I realize it has a temperature alarm. I've never had one before (an alarm). I'll do the necessary tests to confirm that the alarm is in working order. My question is: if I run my engine, and the alarm goes off, am I still safe from doing damage as long as I shut it down right away?

Also, does anyone know whether the telltale water on this engine is before or after the block? i.e. Should the telltale temp be the temperature of the water source or warmer. (1984, 40hp elec. evinrude).
I appreciate the help. Incredible website.

You should not harm your motor if you shut it down when the alarm goes off. On the telltale water before or after - check your manual. It should have a diagram of the water flow which will answer that one.

Re: 40HP Evin. Cooling Question

I changed the thermostat. It still runs warm on the flusher, and I have very, very little water coming out the prop hub. After about 20 minutes running a little above idle, the temp alarm went off. I shut down and the alarm only continued for maybe a minute or two. I didn't go for the water pump right away because I had a good flow out the telltale. I guess the next logical thing to do is change the water pump. I have it apart and the impeller looks OK to me. Is it possible that my pump is weak despite good flow out the telltale? I tested once in a barrel but the motor ran hot there also. Any other ideas?
