40HP EVINRUDE NOT STARTING

i have a 1965 40hp evinrude big twin when i got this boat some guy had tore things apart and didnt put them back, i have tried to rewire the igntion and still will do nothing when i turn key over no clicks noises nothing but the engine is in the up postion does that matter?

I assume you're trying to start the motor tilted up, rather in the normal run position. I assume you've got the motor on the muffs with the water running ... if not, be prepared to replace the water pump.<br /><br />Have you tried the recoil starter (with the key on)?<br /><br />Do you have a shop manual and checked the ignition wiring?<br /><br />Still doesn't start, try here:<br /><br /> http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=36;t=000001

Let me know if you need a wiring diagram.<br />BTW this motor will not accept water muffs. Lower the bottom end in a water tank before starting. I have a 1967 model.<br /><br />Best Wishes

you can get the "taco" adapter for the hose instead of muffs. I will bet you just have some corroded wiring, try jumping the solenoid with a screwdriver or using jumper cables straight to the starter to see if it turns.

There is a safety interlock so it won't crank in gear.If it is wired wrong or adjusted wrong it may not crank.Switch may be under the hood or at the controls.

well i do have the water taco thing to run it, i used jumper cables right to the starter and it tried starting it, i used a screwdriver to jump the solenoid it sparked but didnt move the starter or anything, and i put a volt meter to the igntion<br />and it spiked when i turned it over but i dont think i have it wired right and the book i have dosnt show any diagrams so if anyone has one that would be great
