CAn anyone provide a bit of input on a correct prop for a later 60's Johnson 40hp. Good power out of the hole but gets quite doggy when making easy turns pulling young children on a single tube, very simply it doesn't take much at all to lose the speed and power, wouild like just "bit more umph" I belive at present it has a 10-3/8 x 12 prop. Thanks for any thoughts.

P.S the motor Runs out great and is on an older 14" StarCraft runabout.

Prop size doesn't sound too bad. There are some other parameters to the equation, though.

What is your load (boat + all in it)?
Is your prop and lower unit in good shape (damages)?
Is your hull clean ?
How high is your motor mounted on the transom ?

If you want to know more about props and boats, look here http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=17;t=014920 or do a search in these forums for 'prop' or 'pitch'

If your late '60's engine is similar to my 1960 (I think it is), then the factory prop should be 10 3/8 X 14, which would be the higher speed version for a light boat. 14' is usually a light boat.

However, a 12" or a 13 1/4" pitch would seem OK if you are pulling skiiers.
