My first boat purchase didn't turn out on a happy note. :( I purchased a fishing boat with a 40hp Johnson (mod. 40EL75C) I believe it must be from the 70's. Anyhow, I took it into the boat shop for a check up and the mechanic told me it would barely move because the leg is too short. He mentioned a 5" extension kit, part #386612. My searches thus far indicate that this part is no longer available. Any suggestions.

That's a 1975 model

the kit does not appear to be listed and although other bits are separately the lower shift rod is not. but see HERE

Check that site for equivalent part numbers.

On the boat the cavitation plate should be just below the bottom of the transom.

you can hunt the parts, cut the transom down, or sell what you have, and get what you need.

Thanks for the advice so far guys, but I have tried to hunt the parts down with no success so far. I know about cutting the transom as well, I don't know that it is that good of an option though. Isn't there another kit that allows you to drop the motor. I seem to recall reading about some kind of "scissor" lowering kit or something????

Yes, selling what I have and getting what I need has crossed my mind.
